FREE Yoga

Yoga's becoming a very popular trend here in Winnipeg, and doesn't seem to be slowing down. There are so many different types of yoga classes from hot yoga to prenatal yoga, and a ton of different types of membership packages across different venues to choose from.

But what if you're a beginner who's not entirely sure yoga is the right fit for you, and you don't want to invest too much money into the activity until you're sure?

We'll let you in on a little secret...

Lululemon is an athletic store in Polo Park Shopping centre that sells workout wear for men and women, water bottles, exercise mats, and plenty of fun workout accessories to add a bit of flare to your exercise activities.

But did you know they also host FREE YOGA CLASSES?

Classes are held every Sunday morning from 9:30am-10:30am before the mall hours, and is open to the public. No calling ahead. No sign-up. No drop-in fee. Just head on down with a couple of friends (alone works too), and be sure to enter through the security doors located between Urban Planet and Scotia Bank to get in. All other mall entrances will be closed.

There's often a different instructor every week who brings in their own unique style, but the classes happen at a beginner level. Still not sure if you can keep up? No problem. It's not a sprint and no one expects you to be perfect. Just do what you can, take a break as often as needed, and drink plenty of water.

And what do you do after you're done? Come back and visit the blog and tell us all about it. We'd love to hear your experiences!

Shannon Klymchuk - Store Owner

Shannon Klymchuk has always loved fashion. When she was laid off at her last job, she decided it was time to try out something fun. She opened a shop at 400 Academy Road, Divine & Conquer. Shannon had taking a fashion merchandising course as well as accounting courses, and felt she had the skills to successfully run a fashion focused business.

Shannon is a true fashionista from birth. She always wanted to look different from everyone else around her and would paint, rip, cut, sew, or dye her clothes to make it so. Divine & Conquer now displays and sells many unique Canadian designer fashions for women in Winnipeg, and tries to only carry items no one else in Manitoba has.

Some of the designer fashions you'll find include Dee Karpa, Alex Espinosa, and Lennard Taylor.

Stop by Divine & Conquer, say hello, and get a peek at great fashions created in your very own backyard!

Cilantro Lime Chickpea Salad

*Recipe from Oh She Glows
Adapted from Heather.
Yield: 1-2 servings.

Ingredients:
  • One 15-oz can chickpeas (2 cups cooked), drained and rinsed
  • 2 cups spinach
  • 1/4 cup sweet onion, chopped finely
  • Juice from 1.5 limes
  • 3/4 cup fresh Cilantro
  • 1/2 tsp sugar (or to taste)
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt + ground pepper

Directions:
1. In a food processor, add the spinach and pulse a few times until chopped very small. Add the processed spinach, drained chickpeas, and chopped onion into a large bowl.

2. In the food processor (no need to rinse the bowl!), add the lime juice, cilantro, mustard, sugar, garlic, cumin, and oil. Process until smooth, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.

3. Pour the dressing on top of the spinach chickpea mixture and stir well. Add salt and pepper to taste. Let stand for about 10 minutes to let the flavours develop (optiona). Serve over a bed of grains, like brown rice.

Serves 1-2.
Note: The dressing has quite a bite to it, so please feel free to adjust the dressing to your taste buds preference! You may want more oil, less lime, etc.

"Less Garbage Food, More of the Better Food" - Written by Meg

Two years ago Weight-gain and the chore of getting older has caused social services worker Melody Crane, and her husband and lawyer Ted Crane, to become concerned about their health. Their concern led them to sign up for Maximized Living.

“It’s an actual lifestyle.  It’s a program through the Chiropractors Association, made up of chiropractors in Winnipeg.  It’s a holistic sort of a lifestyle.  It has to do with healthy mind, healthy body, healthy spine, and avoiding toxins,” said Melody.

Their diet has changed a lot – they no longer consume grains or sugar, and eat mostly organic foods.

They say that since starting Maximized Living, they have more energy, need less sleep, are more alert and have a greater sense of well-being.  But does it come at great cost?

“People think it’s more expensive (to buy organic), but I find that because I’m not buying a lot of processed food - I stick to the very basics like meat, dried beans, and stuff like that.  You end up buying less of the garbage food and more of the better food”

“It’s really not more expensive.  You get better value for your money,” said Ted.

In addition to changing their diet to incorporate more healthy foods, the Cranes have also started living a more active lifestyle.

“People seem to think you have to exercise for an hour, two hours to work out,” said Melody.

But for the Cranes, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Maximized Living has workout videos that are 20 minutes which they recommend people do a few times a week, and so far, Melody and Ted have followed suit and have been happy with their results.

Although they enjoy Maximized Living’s workout videos, they like to switch up their physical activity by doing simple things like taking their dog Sasha for walks. Every little bit counts, and there are so many ways to incorporate healthy eating and exercise to your daily routine. You just have to have the drive to get started and the will to see it through.
